Historical Background
Benjamin Gibson joined John Gibson in Rome in 1837, and worked in his brother's studio, carving copies of Gibson's works and producing some original designs; an authority on classical literature and antiquities, he also acted as his brother's 'classical dictionary'. He died while on a visit with John Gibson to Bagni di Luca on 13 August 1851 [DNB.]

The papers consist of notes and extracts from written sources relating to classical mythology, philosophy, religion, geometry, sculpture and poetry. Most of the notes on classical mythology are in the hand of
Benjamin Gibson, from whom there is also some draft correspondence. All the notes are ms unless stated.
