The minutes state that the Committee was nominated and convened by
Sir William Llewellyn, PRA, and record that the chapter of St Paul's Cathedral had agreed to a suggestion to place a memorial tablet to John Constable in the crypt on the occasion of the centenary of his death (1 April 1937). It was decided to make an appeal early in 1935, by means of a letter to
The Times, and to establish a John Constable Prize for the encouragement of landscape painting by artists of British nationality.
