Notes by Ernest Richmond state that this is an edited draft from which a fair copy was written (RI2/24). The time taken in carrying out the work; comparison with Raphael's work. The light thrown on the work by his sonnets, its intellectual and moral content, his style. The ignorance of his followers; his grasp of form in the round, use of light and shade, that tone is primary to colouring.
