Content Description
Londonderry apologised if there should be any misunderstanding with reference to the statue of Bacchus. From their last conversation he believed that Gibson was determined to paint the statue, and that Gibson had left it entirely an open question whether Londonderry had the statue or not. Lord Londonderry was confirmed in the view that he was entirely free by Gibson's not having applied to him for the usual payment in advance. Londonderry therefore declined to purchase the statue. He adds in a postscript that if he had considered himself bound to take the statue, he would have objected to copies of the head being made.
