Content Description

He believes his last was written from Cawnpore, where the 2nd Brigade had relieved the garrison. Since that time he has little to report [the letter is both long and detailed]. Duncan has taken over as resident from Grant. The 1st Assistant, Neave, has bought and improved van Zandt's[?] bungalow. Treeves[?] continues to improve his own house, d'Aguilar is with him.

Augustus Grant continues in the same position, with the same influence, he has recently made a great loss through a Mr. McKintosh, a countryman, in partnership with Messrs. Luard & Co., who succeeded Williams & Ranken to disastrous effect.

Col. McKenzie has taken over at Barrackpore, after the death of General Pearse. McKenzie constantly talks of going back to Europe. Morris is well but stationed poorly as Captain in the European Regiment. Robert Grant has married a sister of Farquharson's. Leonard Collings has been appointed paymaster to the garrison and station at Chunar. Cameron continues as Engineer there. Captain Brown and Mrs Grant are well, he is on the invalid establishment, and still talks of divorce. If it doesn't happen soon Mrs Grant should return to England. Humphry's demand on him for 600 siccas has been honoured. Captain R. Scott has lost his wife, Humphry's shipmate. Continues with news of acquaintances at Cawnpore. He has found the Friths and describes their circumstances. Describes an expedition to Delhi. Thomas Daniell has made many drawings. On his return from Delhi Daniell set off again and has is in the middle of an extensive tour. He was obliged to engraved the Calcutta Views himself.

He includes a sketch of the current political events in India, drawn from newspapers. Signs off with news of himself, of no great moment.
