Content Description
Gibson describes the item, at the head of the page, as a copy of part of a letter. In it he discusses a monument to the late governor of Ceylon. £800 was not enough for a statue to be placed in the open air, for such a statue needed to be larger than life. A 6 feet statue suitable to be placed in a church or other public building would cost £1,000. Gibson suggests two ideas for a bas relief, one showing the introduction of coffee to the island by the governor. If the commission had amounted to £1,000, Gibson would have recommended a simple 6 feet statue in the church.
