Historical Background
The Directors of the Society of Artists decided on 28 August 1767 [SA/10], to mark St Luke's Day with a religious service, as they had noticed that "all other societies celebrate their anniversary with Devotion previous to the Election of their Officers and Directors", and felt that they should "follow so laudable an example by appointing a Chaplain to preach a Sermon on St Lukes Day". James Wills, history painter turned Anglican curate, was chosen to fill the office of Chaplain. His appointment was ratified at the general meeting of 1 September 1767.
Content Description
Expressing gratitude at the award to him of 30 guineas by the Society of Artists.
