Francis G.W. Gilbert, 5 Warrington Gardens, Maida Vale, to Spielmann
He has just arrived from Bruges and provides an account of what he saw. The little figures [for the
Duke of Clarence tomb] are nearly complete, although lack of money will prevent their casting. A brother artist has, however, helped his father by securing commissions from a Mr. S. Wilson, J.P., of Leeds. His father is so poor that he is forced to make a living out of clay portraits of non-entities, of "exquisite beauty". The International Society of Artists has offered him an exhibition at the
New Gallery. Telegrams to the King and Queen have brought no replies, but has contacted the
President of the R.A..
