Miss McAllister had written to say that [Alfred] Gilbert's Civil List pension of £120 per year was to cease that year. It had occurred to Ponsonby that the Royal Academy might be the right authority to ask the Prime Minister to continue the pension on the grounds of Gilbert's great abilities as an artist.
