Content Description
Draft letter expressing concern that Gilbert had ignored many letters written to him by the Council. This fact had given members just reason to believe that there was no satisfactory explanation for the numerous complaints relating to commissions which Gilbert had not carried out, despite having been paid in full. The respect in which Gilbert was held by his fellow members had prevented them from taking action, despite warnings that he was bringing discredit on the Royal Academy. It had now been decided to bring the matter before the General Assembly, and Poynter asks Gilbert to resign: a thing he could easily do, by alleging that his residence abroad made it impossible for him to fulfil his duties as an Academician.
