He has a good impression of the addressee's nephew, who is studying with him, his ornament is very strong and he knows architecture; the reason Humphry came to Rome was that he feared miniature painting would ruin his eyesight, and so he is seeks to "extend the scale" of his art and even "dip into a little history", although he is far from certain of the success of his efforts.
