Historical Background

The Society of Artists appointed William Whitaker, Serjeant at Law, in 1765 as legal counsel to assist them with the preparation of a bill to represent artsists' interests by amending the Copyright Act. Whitaker read the draft and met the Directors in person at their meeting of 23 March 1767. The bill to protect artists' copyright became law in May 1767.
