Historical Background

This series was created by Humphrey Brooke in 1952, on his arrival as Secretary of the Academy.

Content Description

An ongoing series of papers, arranged systematically and, in principle, containing all papers available to members of Council for each meeting. Files from Humphrey Brooke's period are rather complicated in composition. It appears that Brooke used these Council files as the central series for all records generated by business flowing from the agendas of Council meetings. Files 1952 to 1968 contain a great deal of members' letters. There is a break in the series during the 1970s which corresponds to Sidney Hutchison's tenure as Secretary. Upon Piers Rodgers's appointment in 1982 the series picks up, but it is apparent that the files were not carefully compiled and are incomplete. From the appointment of David Gordon in 1996 the series is maintained with great regularity. Since 2003 papers have entered the archive at the point of creation.

The files have been weeded of the following duplicate material - investment reports and accounts 1952-1968; Council minutes; draft Annual reports; compiled summer exhibition press coverage.

Provenance

The provenance of all of the records is the Secretary, on behalf of the President and Council itself.

Acquisition Details

Files 1-35 passed through the hands of the Secretary to the Registry for storage, before reaching the archive in 1996. Files 36-56 were generated by the Membership Office and transferred regularly as modern records. Files 57 onwards were transferred at creation and sent to the Archivist at the same time as to the members of Council.

Access

Council papers are closed for a period of 30 years from deposit.
