He writes by the Ravensworth, the first ship despatched. He waits for a copy of the will of his late Aunt which is trapped, along with many people's letters, on board the Camden. He hopes Humphry will write a long letter for him to receive from the first ships of 1788.

Captain Brown has commenced an attachment with Mrs [James] Grant. This was carried out under the nose of J. Grant. Brown has quitted the bungalows with Mrs G. and made a finanial settlement on her. Should the divorce come through he has no doubt she will visit England.

Brown has prmosied to pay 600 calcutta siccas on Humphry's account. James Grant has, to everyone's astonishment, resigned the Chiefship, which has been taken over by Jonathan Duncan. Provides other news of the British community. That Smith wishes to go back home, he has painted a family piece for James Grant, who has also ensured that Smith got paid by Hyder Beg Kahn, settling the Nabob's debt.
