Content Description
Complaining that Alfred Gilbert had failed to finish a reredos in St Albans Abbey, despite having received almost the whole sum requested by him (£1,500). Gilbert had accepted the commission in 1890, but paid no attention to it for six years. Some progress had been made in 1897 and 1898, but in the last 17 months he had never been near St Albans, and took no notice of Aldenham's letters. It did not make the matter better in Aldenham's eyes that, as he learned, Gilbert had treated
the King as badly as himself.
