Michael Landy RA: H2NY

Michael Landy RA is the ‘Out To Lunch’ interview guest in the Spring 2009 issue of RA Magazine. Among other projects, Landy has been working on a documentary on the work of Swiss artist, Jean Tinguely, H2NY. Here is a short extract:

H2NY
Director: Michael Landy, RA
Producers: Bay Garnett, Daisy Garnett & Nikki Weston

Michael Landy’s documentary charts his fascination with Swiss artist, Jean Tinguely's 1960 art work Homage to New York, the most famous of Tinguely's auto-destruct machines. Having taken three weeks to construct, the machine took twenty-seven minutes to destroy itself in front of an invited audience in the Museum of Modern Arts' Sculpture Garden. Both a celebration and meditation, the film is Landy’s testament to his relationship with Homage to New York. It echoes, extends and reflects on what happened on that rainy night forty-nine years ago. The full-length version of Michael Landy’s film runs for twenty-seven minutes.

The film was supported by the Channel 4 BRITDOC Foundation, Arts Council England & the ICA as part of the BRITDOCART scheme. For more details including information on how to find out about screenings, visit: www.britdoc.org/real_films/film/h2ny

  • This film can be seen in full for the first time as part of the forthcoming exhibition 'Joyous Machines: Michael Landy and Jean Tinguely' at Tate Liverpool (2 October 2009 - 10 January 2010). A whole section of the exhibition will be dedicated to Jean Tinguely's Homage to New York (1960). Michael Landy's documentary film and a selection of his impressive series of drawings (he has made over 160 in total), will be presented alongside photographs, films and relics of the original event.
