The Story behind Langan’s Restaurants and David Hockney

The story begins with Peter Langan, in the late 1960’s, living in a Marylebone flat above four young artists; Patrick Proctor, Patrick Caulfield, John Hoyland and David Hockney.

Peter Langan who was the chef at Odin’s Restaurant, then opened Langan’s Bistro encouraging artists to trade art for food and drink but also procured the services of Hockney and Proctor to design the restaurant menus.

“To find a restaurant close at hand which was not only welcoming but extremely
good, and to boot, that bought one’s paintings in exchange for food, was a thrill
for David and for me.”- Patrick Proctor

There was a period in the 60’s when Hockney and friends went out almost every night to Odin’s and this continued when Peter Langan acquired the larger premises in Piccadilly. One of the first pictures Hockney traded in this way was the Enchantress with Baby Rapinzel.

Richard Shepherd who had known Peter Langan for some time, was recruited as Executive Chef of Langan’s Brasserie, becoming the first English Chef in London to have been awarded a Michelin Star. David Hockney painted three portraits of the new owners of Langan’s Brasserie which have been used in the graphics for the menus.
