Inspiration: Throughout my photography I have been largely influenced by Nadav Kander’s photographs. I am interested in the ways he emphasizes objects in the photograph with light, and transforms everyday objects into interesting photographs. I found Gregory Crewdson’s work inspiring; although he works on a much larger scale, I think it’s interesting to see how he uses the light to communicate a narrative in the image. In my portraiture painting I was interested in Gwen John’s work because her paintings of women have a calm relaxed energy and show the person in a meditative state. The colours she uses in the paintings are subdued and so work well with the tranquil setting of the image. Gwen John’s paintings create calm energy of stillness, but at the same time the subtle colouring, short foreground and thoughtfulness of the sitter create a deeply intense atmosphere.

Title: Basketball Court

Description: My night photographs demonstrate the controls of decisions and the dramatic results they can have on how we perceive things. My idea originated from looking at reports in the media; I found it interesting what the media decide to report or ignore and the final result in what we, the public, get to see of society. I want to represent this idea of control in my photography, as a response to the decisions that are made all around us. I feel I can represent this in my night photography through the choices I have to make when creating the photographs. I use the dark to demonstrate the important choices I have as the photographer, to choose what the viewer is able to see in the photographs, and what is hidden in the darkness. I emphasized certain objects in my images with the light from a flash gun. The light can change the subject’s appearance and give it a different meaning from how it is usually seen.
