This year’s Annual Lecture will be delivered by Glenn Brown

The work of Glenn Brown (b.1966) came to prominence during the 1990s, and has been associated with the strategies of ‘Appropriation’ at that time. The smooth surfaces of his meticulous paintings have recontextualised the work of various 1970s science fiction illustrators, the Surrealist fantasies of Salvador Dali and the thick impasto of Karel Appel and Frank Auerbach.

More recently, Brown's work has turned its attention to a wider range of art historical references, with extravagant and dystopic renditions of Neo-Classical themes and Baroque flights of fancy.

A major, mid-career survey of his work to date was exhibited at Tate Liverpool in 2009.

The annual lecture forms part of one of four annual events run by the Royal Academy Schools which are open to both the public and Royal Academy Schools students.

The Royal Academy Schools is run by artists for artists and is a leading centre for the postgraduate study of fine art; offering the only three-year, full time course in the UK. The RA Schools offer a forum for a lively programme of events, with lectures and individual tutorials provided by Royal Academicians, international contemporary artists, critics, writers and theorists.
