Changing Faces in an Age of Revolution

9 March 2007

What happened in the later eighteenth century to make people ashamed of the way they had looked before? The collapse or overthrow of old regimes on both sides of the Atlantic made them want to change their appearance as much as their behaviour. Professor William Doyle, University of Bristol and author of The French Revolution: A Very Short Introduction and The Oxford History of the French Revolution, analyses the perils and uncertainties unleashed by the Age of Revolution, which left many seeking (in vain) for the security of older patterns.

Reynolds Room; 6:30-7:30pm; £14/£6 students (incl. exhibition entry & drink), £10 (incl. drink)
