Internal Communications Officer

Communications Department

The Royal Academy of Arts (RA) is one of the UK’s foremost arts institutions. Though best known for its world class exhibition programme – including The Real Van Gogh, Anish Kapoor and David Hockney RA: A Bigger Picture – it has a strong tradition of learning and debate, and it is home to Britain’s oldest art school. The RA is an independent charity, led by pre-eminent artists and architects – the Royal Academicians – and its mission is to be a clear, strong voice for art and artists. It is engaged in a major transformation as it extends its activities over an expanded site in Mayfair.

Alongside its responsibilities for generating marketing and publicity campaigns to support the work of the Academy, the Communications team is also responsible for internal communications at the RA.

Following the development of a new vision, values and positioning for the Academy, we now require a strong communications professional to coordinate the implementation of the next phase of this project to embed these within the organisation.

The successful candidate will be an experienced communicator/marketer with three years’ commercial experience, ideally as an internal communications specialist developing and implementing effective internal communications and employee engagement projects.

A first class wordsmith, he/she must be able to draft a variety of engaging communications designed principally for staff. A strong project manager and logistician, they will have well-honed organisational skills, be able to multi task at speed and ensures nothing is forgotten. In addition to written communications, this role will coordinate a variety of staff internal events and initiatives.

Candidates will ideally have demonstrable experience of turning strategy into effective action, and previous exposure to brand, internal change and/or employee engagement projects gained in-house or within a brand/communications agency.

Well presented, articulate and confident, they will be friendly and approachable to build effective working relationships with internal colleagues and external stakeholders.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate a genuine interest and knowledge of the visual arts and a sound understanding of the Royal Academy of Arts.
